The Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC), with financial support from the State Government, has successfully completed a significant project at Yarra Park, aligning with the comprehensive 'Yarra Park Masterplan.' This ambitious plan aimed to enhance the parkland substantially. Among the key elements of the project was the installation of an underground water recycling plant, strategically designed to secure vital non-potable water for various purposes within Yarra Park, the MCG, and Punt Road Oval.
The Yarra Park Water Recycling Facility serves a vital role in providing an annual supply of 140-180 million litres of Class A water. This water is primarily intended for irrigation use in Yarra Park, the Richmond Football Club, and the MCG grounds, where it is made accessible without restrictions. Moreover, this recycled water contributes to a third pipe recycling scheme, utilized in MCG toilets, amenities, as well as cleaning and maintenance operations.
To put its significance into perspective, the Class A water produced by the Yarra Park Water Recycling Facility has the capacity to replace the volume of potable water that would be sufficient to supply approximately 1150 households annually.
The process commences with the Yarra Park Water Recycling Facility obtaining raw sewage from City West Water's Wellington Parade South trunk route. This sewage is then efficiently diverted to a 600kL/day Class A sewer treatment plant through a dedicated underground supply pipe, leading to the Yarra Park Water Recycling Facility situated beneath Yarra Park, just north of the MCG. Subsequently, the Class A water is distributed to end-users through a network of pumps and pipes.
Through the successful completion of this project, the MCC and the State Government have not only demonstrated their commitment to environmental sustainability but have also taken significant steps towards ensuring a reliable and eco-friendly water supply for various activities and facilities within this iconic precinct.
